Great INTERVIEW (ČT24 1.11.2022) of the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenski with Michal Kubala. A president with unshakeable moral credentials, an enlightened man and a real man. The President of Ukraine switches from Ukrainian to English twice during the interview. You can see his incredible workload. As he thinks and speaks, the viewer does not notice the time at all. A truly great president. The Czech government scored strongly with its visit to Kiev, a worthy government of a country that holds the EU presidency. Michal Kubala does not deny a great school by staying in the USA. I first met him at the funeral of Ctirad Mašín in Cleveland in August 2011. JŠ

Volodymyr Zelenskij: „The Power is in the Truth!“

(This is the text of my briefing of The United Nations Security Council this morning, 14 March 2023, for a session called by the Russian Federation to discuss "russophobia."  If you wish to quote me exactly as I spoke, you might wish to check against the video of the session, which for now is available here.)

Ladies and gentlemen, I come before you as a historian of the region, as a historian of eastern Europe, and specifically as a historian of mass killing and political atrocity.  I am glad to be asked to brief you on the use of the term "russophobia" by Russian state actors. I believe that such a discussion can clarify something about the character of Russia's war of aggression in Ukraine and Russia's illegal occupation of Ukrainian territory.  I will speak briefly and confine myself to two points.

One of the concomitant phenomena of Russian aggression is the brazen lying of Russian officials. It is common for people to lie, just as it is common for politicians to lie. But there is some evidence to convict the liars. For example, when the person is caught on camera, when many witnesses see him commit the act, when he is caught in the act, etc. I know anything can be challenged, but we still live in a world where the truth is assumed to be discoverable.

The Russians are showing us that objectively nothing may be true at all and that there is still a kind of reality to them. When they first invaded Ukraine, they were not Russian soldiers, but some unmarked soldiers on leave. If they are now committing demonstrable crimes, then they are not committing them, but the Ukrainian Nazis are. When we see corpses lying in the streets, they are hired extras. When Ukrainians are being taken to Russia against their will, it is not against their will. When they carry out genocide, it is denazification. When they drop bombs on human dwellings, it is a cleansing of the enemies hiding in those dwellings.

In memoriam Anna Politkovskaya, Boris Nemtsov, Alexander Litvinenko, Sergej Magnitsky and many other unknown heroes murdered by Putin's criminal regime. Evil is not dealt with, only power is respected, those who are unable to use it will lose. JŠ
