The legislation passed an initial vote, but it will need parliamentary approval before becoming law
The European Union has taken the first step in passing new copyright legislation that critics say will tear the internet apart.
This morning, the EU’s Legal Affairs Committee (JURI) voted in favor of the legislation, called the Copyright Directive. Although most of the directive simply updates technical language for copyright law in the age of the internet, it includes two highly controversial provisions. These are Article 11, a “link tax,” which would force online platforms like Facebook and Google to buy licenses from media companies before linking to their stories; and Article 13, an “upload filter,” which would require that everything uploaded online in the EU is checked for copyright infringement. (Think of it like YouTube’s Content ID system but for the whole internet.)

For almost three decades, U.S. administrations have tiptoed around the egregious human rights violations perpetrated by the Kim regimes in North Korea. But U.S. Secretary of State Michael Pompeo already has changed the equation, by succeeding in securing the release of American detainees Kim Dong-chul, Kim (Tony) Sang-duk, and Kim Hak-song. A reminder to us and the world that the United States still has the clout to move the needle on human rights.
On the eve of the Singapore summit on denuclearization, we urge President Donald Trump to put the release of Japanese, other foreign and South Korean abductees, the reunion of separated Korean families, and the complete, verifiable, irreversible dismantlement of the North Korean political prison camps, as the bill the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea must foot to become a normal and responsible member of the international community.

… As it turned out, the great majority of the Czechoslovak revolutionary (constitutional) National Assembly, established after the war, was in favor of Masaryk's views and paid no attention to the declaration of common goals of independent Central European views. The National Assembly did not derive its power from the consent of the ruling - it was not chosen by the Czechoslovak people, and the Czechoslovak Germans, Hungarians, Poles and Russians living in the country did not have the opportunity to "organize their own governments on such principles and in the form they believed would best support their welfare , safety and happiness." …
