New Year's resolution
Only in the covid age can "New Year's resolution" have a double meaning. As Czechs make firm decisions about improving thein behavior, the Czech government is apparently about to resolve to lock them down even more. The current government resolution expires on Jan. 10, but Germany is leading the way toward an extension that will last at least until the end of this month. This will give people plenty of time to reassess their own situation and their understanding of the world.

Biden on Tuesday picked Harris as his running mate, recognising the crucial role Black voters could play in his determined bid to defeat President Donald Trump in the US presidential election. As scores of media outlets and social media enthusiasts dug into Harris’ past, the piece of information that stood out the most was her affair at 29 with San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown, who was then 60. The couple met in 1994.

In his Christmas address on Sat., Pres. Miloš Zeman gave his full support to the covid-19 vaccination program and said that by getting inoculated, "We will help not only ourselves, but mainly others." The purpose of the vaccine is prevent people from dying from the disease, so it's not clear what Zeman meant. There is no evidence that it prevents transmission, even though politicians are going out of their way to avoid saying this. It's true, however, that a vaccinated person can help others by not taking up a hospital bed or other precious medical resources.

Ministers must improve the way they use and communicate advice from scientists or risk repeating
mistakes made earlier in the coronavirus pandemic, a think tank has warned.
A report from the Institute for Government outlined a series of errors it said the government made in the past 10 months: from the lack of a coherent strategy when lockdown restrictions were lifted in May to its failure to consult scientists on “epidemiologically illiterate” policies, such as the “Eat Out to Help Out” scheme, and its delay in consulting the Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies on the return of students to universities.
Many such problems had been seen in the government’s handling of past crises, such as the outbreaks of bovine spongiform encephalopathy, foot and mouth disease, and H1N1 “swine” flu, said the report. These included the blurring of policy decisions and expert advice, relying on uncertain modelling and “groupthink,” and a lack of transparency in explaininghowevidence and advice were used.

Despite the existing regulatory framework for visa issuance that lays out all the procedures for a visa, including required documents, the period of processing and more, the Member States’ visa-issuing practices still diverge in several aspects the quinquennial report on the Functioning of the Schengen Evaluation and Monitoring Mechanism has found.
The report, which was published last week, consists of the findings of evaluations carried out in the last five years within the Schengen Area Member States in several policy areas, including the common visa policy.
According to the report, upon 29 evaluations that were carried out in relation to common visa policy throughout the last five years, the Commission has concluded that while the Member States adequately implement the policy to a large extent, serious deficiencies exist.

Jan Bata's Dr. Honoris Causa degree has been restored by the university. Finally, it only took 73 years. But, it is progress. Jan A. Bata is now Dr. Jan A. Bata again.
"Our family is very happy to learn the news of the restoration of Jan Antonin Bata’s Dr. Honoris Causa degree in Technical Sciences. He was awarded this degree for his engineering achievements of creating the city of Otrokovice using water jets to level a mountain and building a 50 kilometer canal system (the Bata canal) spanning the Czech Republic and Slovakia to control flooding on the Morava River. We are grateful that his accomplishments are still a part of the nation's memory."

Terrible drame au port de Tanger ville

The newly appointed French consul in Tangier was found dead, Thursday, in his house. Denis Francois, appointed on September 15 by a decree of President Emmanuel Macron, is believed to have committed suicide, Le360 reported Thursday.
According to the same source, the diplomat would have «hanged himself in his room», at around 7 am this morning. Denis Francois joined the French consulate in Tangier in October. Before replacing former French consul to Tangier Thierry Vallat, Francois worked as an adviser at the French Foreign Affairs Ministry.
