Zlin, South Moravia, Nov 9 (CTK) - A book of reflexions and speeches of Tomas Bata (1876-1932), the Zlin-based Czech entrepreneur who founded the famous Bata shoe-making empire, appeared in English for the first time these days, issued by the Tomas Bata Foundation on his 140th birth anniversary. The book's Czech version was first published in 1932.
Bata ranks among the world's most significant businesspeople, but the political and social situation in Czechoslovakia after 1945 prevented further promotion of his unique philosophy of an entrepreneur, the foundation's director, Karel Velev, told CTK yesterday. "At last, we are starting to discover the importance of Tomas Bata and his visions. We study with humbleness his ideas, which we find timeless," Velev said.

For a full year attorney Jiri Setina was the General Prosecutor in Prague between 1992 and 1993. He could not foresee the coup from the end of 1989, which could only end in failure. Setina’s experience as a former prosecutor with a state taboo.
From the year 1992-1993 attorney Setina was the General Prosecutor in Prague a short time. It could be predicted that everything that he touched from the change of regime from 1989 could not end well. These were his experiences with the taboos of the state.
First he worked in the new "Office for the Protection of the Constitution and Democracy," which was similar to the German Office for the Protection of the Constitution. While this was still going on, he built up an authority, which was like the German Gauck Institute that dug into the archives of the communist secret police with regard to specific individuals. Thus, Setina did not make friends. The new political authority gave him little support. They granted him only sixteen people; he was the only lawyer. His proposals on how to organize the administration were rejected. But he managed to get things done. Setina discovered files about an agent whom the Czechoslovakian secret service had embedded into the radio-free Europe radio station in Munich, and who had prepared an attack on their headquarters. The agent was arrested and tried in Prague. This could not help Setina because a lot of these communist agents from the communist era still sat in state institutions.

I am sitting bare-knuckled without answers to these questions, and for what reason – let everyone find their own answers. Everyone has their own "why," and recently I have lost many of these "whys." But one thing I have not lost is faith in justice. I do not mean the kind of faith that the government apparatus and system supposedly guarantees, but faith in the fact that you reap what you sow.
Let us now look together (or look now with me) at a number of facts that, regardless of whether they were even possible, were the deciding factor in me being convicted of robbery and attempted murder. I lived with my grandparents in Hořice during the week because of school, and would return home to Liberec on weekends. The crime occurred on 21 February 2013 at a men's and children's hair salon in a Hořice housing development, where I wanted to get a haircut after an English lesson. However, as it was just before closing the hairdresser did not take me. At home, on Saturday, 23 February my mother told me what had happened in Hořice and that they were looking for witnesses. I called the police station myself to tell them that I had been at the hair salon.

PRAGUE — Czech President Milos Zeman has decided against awarding a state medal to a Holocaust survivor after the man's nephew, a Czech government minister, met exiled Tibetan leader the Dalai Lama against the president's wishes, the minister said on Friday.
The Czech Republic has been engulfed in political furor over the Dalai Lama's meetings this week with Culture Minister Daniel Herman against the wishes of China's government - which sees the Dalai Lama as a separatist - and Zeman, who has strongly pushed for a closer economic relationship with China.

… Let me now again put my notes away for a moment. After having a discussion with his holiness today, I realized that we very often have a question in our mind – about what we should do, what is our place in this fight for better world, how to behave. In Slovakia one of the best people whom I had the chance to meet, and had a chance to have a discussion father Srholec, Slovak priest who spent many years in prison during totalitarian period. He always said that we have to stay in line with our values and that people with the same values should stay united. Father Srholec liked to say 'I don't know what will happen in the future, what will happen tomorrow, but today I know how I would behave.' So, please, we should stay with our values, and we should know now how we would behave in the future. Thank you.
