WNBA player Brittney Griner has changed her mind about standing for the national anthem before games. Like some other athletes, she stopped standing for the anthem in 2020 as a form of protest against the U.S. After being imprisoned for ten months in Russia on trumped-up charges of drug smuggling, she’s back on the court in the U.S. and standing for Old Glory. "Imprisoned in Russia. As a progressive girl, she refused to stand for the anthem. Russian prison gave her a new perspective on what the U.S. flag symbolizes. Even our disaffected youth from Extinction Rebellion would have a completely different perspective on life in our society after a month in the DPRK." Roman Joch

The impeachment of former President Donald Trump is just the latest manoeuvre by a number of US officials seeking to influence the US election. This tactic is reminiscent of a statement by Soviet secret police chief Lavrentiy Beria: "Show me a man and I'll find a crime for you."
"In a case like this, it's not about uncovering a crime and then finding the person who committed it. It's about targeting a particular person and then combing the law books or tasking investigators to pin something on him."
Neither Donald Trump nor any other Republican who will run for US president in 2024 can avoid harsh political attacks. It seems that many in America want to see the further entrenchment of authoritarian power (such as here, here, here, here and here), and are prepared to do anything to prevent American voters from electing their president in an orderly and democratic manner in 2024.

I know of no example of more intelligent things being controlled by less intelligent things - I was shaken by the realization that digital intelligence is probably much more capable than biological intelligence - Biological intelligence and digital intelligence are very different, and digital intelligence is probably of much higher quality.
Geoffrey Hinton recently left Google. He warns of the dangers of artificial intelligence. Will artificial intelligence really destroy us? And how long do we have to prevent it?
"When I tried to think about how the brain could implement the algorithm behind all these models, I decided that maybe it couldn't - and maybe these big models are actually much better than the brain," he says.

The destructive cocktail of vested interests and widespread corruption is the misfortune and pain of our state. Every year, billions from the budget end up in the private accounts of individuals. Corruption has a powerful influence on the decision-making of government and local politicians and lowers the standard of living of everyone. It affects all branches of government, from road and motorway construction to health care.
It is not just about financial donations; the forms of corruption are varied, from cash to paid trips, luxury gifts, lucrative contracts or grants to lucrative positions on supervisory boards or in the civil service, where ambassadorial posts are among the most popular.
But it doesn't stop there. Every newly appointed deputy, chief director and sometimes even "mere" director chooses an office and a secretariat, gets new equipment, brings in assistants. And, especially in the case of the State Department, they start travelling. The number of inspection, control and other missions increases by leaps and bounds. Towards the end of the term, these staff usually become ambassadors.

Today's text is a short excerpt from an interview with British historian Timothy Garton Ash, published two weeks ago in the German magazine Der Spiegel.
SPIEGEL: You've met many politicians in person. Who made the biggest impression on you?
Garton Ash: Václav Havel.
SPIEGEL: But you also write in your book that he would have done better if people remembered him as a man who gave speeches and never became president.

Even the quality of this car shows where we could be today if we were not occupied by the backward East. Car designer Hans Ledwinka was a Sudeten German. Read his turbulent life story. Films should be made about such extraordinary people as examples for the young, just like Tomáš Baťa and others. Edvard Beneš is also responsible for their fate. He did nothing worthwhile, but he destroyed the lives of those who did and achieved something in life. JŠ

"The Lady from Damascus" is about to end. Doyenne of Czech diplomacy in Syria helped save many allies.
More than once, her life was on the line, yet she is still working in the Czech Republic's uniform in one of the most complex destinations on the planet. According to the findings of Lidovky.cz, the ambassador to Syria, Eva Filipi, is now expected to leave her post in Damascus.
Her diplomatic skills have been praised by the Americans. They reduced their presence in Damascus after the attack on Ambassador Robert Ford in 2011. Subsequently, the Czechs began to play the role of a liaison officer or protector of American interests (the so-called protecting power). This concerns primarily consular issues that affect the fate of specific American citizens. The reason why the US chose the Czech Republic was described six years ago by former Ambassador Ford himself to Foreign Policy magazine. "Eva (Filipi) had a better insight into the mindset of the Syrian government," he recalled.
Diplomacy did not want to comment on the exchange. "The process of appointing ambassadors is conducted in a classified mode and we cannot comment on the details," said Daniel Drake, a State Department spokesman. He added that the Czech embassy in Damascus would continue to act as a "protecting power".

He announced five years ago this month that he would step up his attacks on its finances and activities and see where it took him. On Jan. 8 of this year he explained in detail how contracts with outside production companies at ČT are used to steal money. Many in the media who still make fun of Soukup have a past or current connection to the money pipeline. Candidates for CEO of ČT - and esp. incumbent Petr Dvořák - should explain what they plan to do to stop the theft, but the "independent and democratic" media won't even bother to ask. Full Article>
P.S. Corruption is present in the country at all levels of government. It would be abnormal and unnatural for there to be none in the publicly owned Czech Television. There is a very lucrative "breeding ground" for it to influence the thinking and behaviour of the population by those for whom the interests of the country and its population are not paramount, even though they constantly talk about it. That is why politicians are so protective of it. I haven't met a citizen who is enthusiastic about CT? I wonder who pays for the surveys that show that citizens are enthusiastic about CT's programming? "The programme is the old programme", comes the frequent answer, or in new packaging. JŠ
